It’s the typical problem - you see a fantastic pair of jeans on the rack, only to find out that when you try them on they have a weird cut, they're not flattering or the sizing is way off. Imagine how much bigger a problem that would be if it were for the greatest investment of your life - the new custom home you’re having built.
It’s very difficult to imagine a two-dimensional floor plan from a 3D perspective. How will the space work?
Fortunately, there are ways you can get an accurate idea of your new home before you start the design process. With decades of experience as custom home builders in Adelaide, the team here at Serenity Homes have come up with the following advice.
Gather Decor Inspiration
Often it can be useful to browse homeware retailers and look through the showrooms of the suppliers you will be using. You can get a lot of inspiration for the various rooms in your home (bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms etc.) from these sources which can help when you are trying to imagine your new home.
Look at Display Homes
While custom home builders generally don’t have display homes available, there’s nothing stopping you from checking out the competition. Take a notepad with you and write down any alterations you would make to each home - there are bound to be many, and with your decision to have your new home custom-built, you can have it your way!
Scan your favourite real estate websites for open inspections (for rental or sale) of modern homes in your area. You may pick up some great tips you had not even considered for your home, and you will appreciate the individuality that every home offers.
Be inspired, and make sure your home stands out from the crowd in a way that reflects your lifestyle.
Ask Your Builder
Your builder may have an almost-completed home that you can have a look at, which is a great way to inspect the quality of their build and workmanship.
They can explain and demonstrate features which you are considering, and you can get a very good feel for their overall design and construction philosophy from seeing the (almost) finished product firsthand.
Alternatively they may have clients that are willing to show you around their finished homes, and answer any questions you may have about their personal experience with your builder.
So there are our top tips for getting the most out of your brainstorming & research phase. If you follow them all then you will have a great understanding of the home you wish to build and can avoid any unpleasant surprises at the end of the journey.
